President Ruto rallies nation behind Harambee Stars in CHAN Tournament

By Dennis Mabuka

As Kenya’s Harambee Stars prepare to compete in the upcoming African Nations Championship (CHAN) tournament, President William Ruto has taken a bold step in rallying national support behind the team, calling it “a moment of unity and pride for all Kenyans.”
The Head of State made a surprise visit to the national team’s training base at the Moi Sports Centre, Kasarani Annex, last week, where they were wrapping up their first week of residential training.

During his visit, President Ruto pledged full government support to ensure the team performs at its best.
“We are delighted as a country to host this tournament. We will be making history for Kenya,” said President Ruto. “When I decided to have Kenya bid for both CHAN and AFCON, I believed we had the capacity and the ability.”
He added: “You are going to represent more than 50 million Kenyans, and that is the weight of responsibility on your shoulders. I have come here to tell you that we believe in your capacity and potential, and we will proudly cheer you to victory. Know that the whole country is behind you. Let it be historic—if we are hosting it for the first time, then we must win.”

Kenya Ready to Welcome Continent

The President also affirmed that Kenya is ready to welcome the African continent,

President Ruto, who has increasingly made sports a key pillar of his youth agenda, assured the team of the government’s full backing, both financially and institutionally.

He revealed enhanced allowances, improved training facilities, and a dedicated technical team to ensure that the players are well-prepared and motivated.

“We have invested in talent because we believe in it. The government has done its part—now, we trust you to do yours,” he told the players.

“Play with passion, play for the flag, and play knowing 50 million Kenyans are behind you. This is our time! Let the world see what Kenya is made of. Go, Stars, go!”
Head coach Benni McCarthy expressed his gratitude for the visit and promised that the team was ready to rumble and fight for the CHAN glory: “We are honoured as a team to have you grace us with your presence despite your busy schedule. We promise to give our best and work hard to deliver results,” he added.

Challenge for Harambee Stars

Harambee Stars will have to be at their absolute best to compete with former champions Morocco and DR Congo, who have lifted the title twice.

They kick off the tournament on Sunday, August 3.

Zambia, known for their attacking flair, adds another dangerous contender.
Angola, with their physical and disciplined style, have a history of upsetting bigger names and could disrupt the group’s expected order.

For Kenya, playing at home might offer a crucial edge, but they’ll need to hit the ground running to survive a group where every point will be fiercely contested.

Kenya’s second match will be against Angola on August 7 and the third against Morocco on August 10.

They complete their group stage with Zambia’s “Chipolopolo” under former Israel and Chelsea FC tactician Avram Grant.

President Ruto’s Seal of Approval

President Ruto gave his seal of approval on the renovations done at the competition and training venues: “I’m contented with the progress made in the renovation of the Moi International Sports Centre. We are ready for the 2024 TotalEnergies African Nations Championship (CHAN) set for next month.”

It’s now all systems go!
